Bezděz, once a royal castle, is one of the most significant Gothic monuments in the country. Visitors can admire the royal palace with a unique chapel and abundant Gothic architectonic details, the burgrave\’s palace and other parts of the castle. The Grand Tower with a knights\’ hall on the top floor that offers spectacular views of the surroundings is open to the public as well.

Bezděz Castle was built in the 13th century as a royal castle. It is an important part of Czech history. The castle is considered the most sophisticated type of castle ever. It was difficult to access so any extensive renovation was nearly impossible. Bezděz Castle is situated at the top of the hill of Bezděz (604 m above sea level). Its 35 m tall tower offers superb panoramic views of distant surroundings. In good weather, you can see the tops of the Jizerské Hory and Krkonoše.

While walking through castle area you will see Gothic Chapel, the best preserved part of the Bezdez Castle with unique architectonic details. Benedictines monks came to Bezděz in 1661 and repaired a chapel and one of the buildings to make habitation possible. The statue of Virgin of Montserrat was taken to Bezděz in 1635 and drew crowds of pilgrims, who travelled far to see it; it also inspired Countess Anna of Wallenstein to build 15 baroque chapels.

Bezděz Castle is situated at the top of the hill of Bezděz (604 m above sea level). Its 35 m tall Castle Tower offers superb panoramic views of distant surroundings. In good weather, you can see the tops of the Jizerské and Krkonoše Mountains.
After exploring the castle we can relax on the sand beaches surrounding Máchovo Lake, which is just 15 min ride from Bezdez. The largest artificial lake in the region, which is actually a pond, was founded in 1366 by King Charles IV the King of Bohemia.
